Sly and the Family Stone & Opinions on Horsegirl

Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot review Sly Stone’s documentary and memoir and revisit an interview with Family Stone members Jerry Martini and Cynthia Robinson. They also review the new album from Chicago indie rockers Horsegirl.
Review: Horsegirl

Horsegirl formed in Chicago as high school students and Girls Rock Camp participants before signing with Matador and releasing their noisy debut “Versions of Modern Performance” in 2022. Now on their second album, “Phonetics On And On,” their sound is more hushed- evoking bands like The Feelies more than Sonic Youth.
Sly and the Family Stone

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is back with his follow-up documentary film after winning an Oscar for his debut, “Summer of Soul.” “Sly Lives! (aka the burden of black genius)” is a triumph according to Jim and Greg.
Sly Stone’s memoir was something no one in the music industry expected. So the fact it exists is notable, but Jim and Greg feel it falls short of its potential since it seems Sly doesn’t remember many of the most notable episodes in his life.
In 2014 Family Stone members Jerry Martini and Cynthia Robinson spoke with Jim and Greg about their work with Sly Stone during his rise and fall in the music industry.

Dear Listeners,
For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
